Groglass speciality glasses for pictures are made in a high-tech factory in Riga, Latvia.
The Groglass processing plant was built new in 2008. It contains an ultra modern magnetron sputtering line. Here, individual sheets of glass are specially prepared before being placed in huge vacuum chambers. These travel along a conveyor, being processed in stages. In very simple terms, each chamber is drawn down to an almost perfect vacuum before an electric discharge causes a metal element to sputter a very thin, absorption free, film of metal oxide onto the glass surface.

Careful selection of the many parameters allows glass to be coated to various specifications. This includes tuning it to give superb clarity, precise optical parameters and colour correctnes.

Originally developed for aerospace applications, the high tech Groglass magnetron process is environmentally-friendly and guarantees a neutral reflected colour, unparalleled optical quality, uniformity, durability and cleanability.

The magnetron process is generally considered to give a superior overall quality and durability to dip-coated speciality glass.
All Artglass by Groglass picture glass offers ~ 0.5% reflection and transmits around 99% of visible light. Window glass usually used in framing typically gives 9% reflection and transmission of around 91%.
