Whether you want to start a commercial picture framing business, or you just want to frame your own artwork, the basic principles are the same:
- Cut and join the moulding: We can do this for you on our Chop + Rout Service, or supply you with equipment to suit your production volume - this will be a mitre guillotine / saw plus an underpinner to insert v nails (you can't insert v nails with a hammer!).
- Cut a mount: We can supply you with a mountcutter to suit your needs.
- Cut glazing and backing board with a sheet material cutter or hand tools.
- Assemble the frame with a point driver that inserts points to hold the back in place.
You'll also need to learn some key skills:
- Working out frame sizes and how much material you'll need
- Joining frames with dovetail keys or v nails
- Cutting mounts
- Hinging / mounting artwork
- Cutting acrylic glazing and backing board
- Assembling frames, taping and adding hanging hardware
We work with a number of trainers who can help get you up to speed, or you'll find lots of information on our website and on YouTube.
If you're going to use our Chop + Rout Service, it's essential that you read our Chop Service Measuring Guide before you get started. Our customer service team can't calculate material quantities or frame sizes for you.
To talk to us about the best equipment for your framing set-up email our experienced Technical Services Team at techserv@lionpic.co.uk. They'll be able to provide advice on what you need and offer support with installation.
