Frame a Canvas

Products featured

Adding a frame can transform a stretched canvas, giving it a more finished look. L Style mouldings form a ‘tray’ frame, the canvas is held in place at the back with Canvas Offsets. Watch our video to see how its done.

To work out what size to order an L Style moulding on our Chop Service, measure the canvas then add 2x the shadow gap you want to leave between the canvas and the frame to each dimension. The shadow gap between the canvas and the frame is normally 5-10mm.

How to frame a canvas

Enhance a canvas with a tray frame made from an L Style moulding.

  • Step one

Pick an L Style moulding that’s the right height for your stretched canvas.

  • Step two

To work out what size to make the frame measure the canvas and then add 20mm to each dimension. This creates a 10mm shadow gap between the canvas and the frame.

  • Step three

For example, a canvas is 559x356mm so the inner size of the frame will be 579x376mm.

  • Step four

To cut the frame of a Morso use the width of the moulding to set the stop beam. In this case 25mm.

  • Step five

If ordering on Chop Service enter the size including the additional 20mm for the shadow gap.

  • Step six

Join the frame on your underpinner and tape the back for a neat finish.

  • Step seven

Using pieces of 10mm foam centre board as spacers – drop the canvas into the frame.

  • Step eight

When happy with the alignment, flip the canvas over and fix it in place using canvas offsets that match the thickness of the base of the L profile.

  • Step nine

Add CWH square sawtooth hangers and frame bumpers.
